Well, given how infrequently I update this ol' personal blog, I think it's about time I moved things over to JKRiki.com permanently. It's updated every Monday, after all! Plus I'm going to be upgrading it in the next few months to include links to other spots I hang out online, such as my new digs at Instagram. If you're looking for me in the meantime, check over here!
Please note: Posts here older than June 24th, 2015 should be considered officially archived. I am not removing them, but in the ten years that I have been writing on this blog I have changed a great deal. Things beyond this point should be considered outdated at best, and may contain many errors or opinions I no longer hold. These things tend to happen as you grow and live life. Or at least, they hopefully happen as you try to become a better person as you age! I just want readers to be aware of that, so that if you decide to go poking through history you will know that it doesn't necessarily reflect my current or future views.
If you'd like current thoughts and posts, please visit JKRiki.com for regular scheduled updates that provide better insights and information. Thanks!
Today is April Fools Day. Just a reminder to anyone reading, don't believe anything anyone says today. Especially not Sceb. I'm just saying.
Also there is a new Animator Island article up today. That you can believe. I would never lie to you on April 1st.
Today's blog post is, ironically, about blog posts. I've got two lined up for you.
First for ye animators, there's a new article over at Animator Island on Brainless Slobs. It deals with blinking, which if you didn't know really gives your characters life.
Stupid Stuff is Stupid
For ye non-animators (and animators too, of course) you'll find Sceb stopped by his blog and updated before settling down to work on his holiday plans. It's been a while since he's posted, so why not pay him a visit and see what he's up to?
Future Update Schedule Change
Starting today and running as an experiment of sorts until January 1st, I will be updating this here blog on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays weekly. If there's anything exciting to talk about, I may include a Tuesday or Thursday post, but those will be extras now. It's my hope that this improves what I write, since less is sometimes more. As I said, it will be an experiment to try until we ring in the new year together.
On Wednesday this week I'll be discussing a certain just-localized Wii game that you may have heard about. In the meantime check out the links above!
Sceb is back with a new blog entry over at Stupid Stuff is Stupid. He's not sorry for not updating for so long, but I'll apologize for him anyway. Sorry he hasn't updated in so long. I'd say he's been busy, but he hasn't been. He's just been lazy.
Yesterday (warning: Football talk ahead) the Steelers played the Cardinals in Arizona. I find no joy when those two teams meet, because they are my favorite two teams. The Steelers won, but all I could feel was bad that the Cardinals lost. If the Cardinals had won, I'd have been disappointed on the Steeler's loss. A far cry from next week, when the Steelers play the Patriots (and I hate the Patriots - sorry Patriots fans, but your quarterback is way too good and your coach is a filthy cheating sore loser) while Arizona plays Baltimore (and I must root against the Ravens as they share a division with the Steelers, even though I don't truly hate them). Next week will be more fun to watch football.
Also over the weekend I spent 5 hours at Sears waiting for a tire alignment and oil change. The best part was when they called my cell phone to say it would be done in 20 minutes, and when I showed up 30 minutes later at the counter they hadn't even STARTED YET. Thanks, liars.
I also went to the library. I went to the library after the Sears incident because the library soothes my nerves. I love the library.
Today it is back to work, however, and I am glad. I've got some big stuff in the works, which I'll talk more about in the coming days most likely. So stay tuned.
In case you missed it, FredtheMonkey.com updated Friday with links to a new Sceb's Blog Post and Fred Facebook Rambling! Also a new poll, which means the results of the previous one!
Bugger, that background color doesn't match. Hmm... Better add that to the list of Things to Fix for the big redesign October 1st! At any rate, it's clear that most folks liked the little distraction of the blog but are still anxious for more animation. Me too. I think that's what I voted for.
Hmm... That 22% who didn't know Sceb had a blog is troublesome. I had better take that into account for the redesign as well! Good things learned from this poll.
Today I will be working heavily on the new forums, because it's high time we got that puppy launched. I need to get some art done for it I guess, in terms of header images and whatnot. Off to the mines, then! (Hopefully Flying Giraffe is coming along well with the new Smiley Face set he's doing for the big debut.)
Yesterday I spent the day with a few friends at the zoo, and took along my sketchbook to couple in some drawing practice. It was a lot harder than I expected, especially when the animals (I'm looking at you, Elephant) wouldn't hold still long enough for me to get the lines down. I did my best, though, and it was a good experience.
One of the most interesting parts of the trip was when I was finishing up the giraffe sketch and saw out of the corner of my eye a mother telling her kids "Look, he's drawing them." I tipped the sketchbook down so they could see and out of the blue they all held up their phones and asked if they could take a picture. Keep in mind I am an old man (29 is practically ancient, right?) and "in my day" kids that were clearly under 10 didn't have phones at all, let alone iPhones with cameras inside. So it caught me off guard, but I was honored to hold up the page and have a handful of young folks capture my art with their smart phones. So if you see that giraffe on some little girl's Facebook page (I'm sure she has one) you'll know why.
In other, non-drawing news, there is a new entry over at Sceb's Blog today. He's unhappy that his followers number has remained at 33 for quite some time. I explained it's probably because he doesn't update very often. Or post links to the blog at all. Or reply to people who comment and try to build a sense of community. He said I should shut up. Hey, I tried.
Monday morning, and you know what that means! New Blog from Sceb right here.
I also wanted to take a quick moment to further explain the Forum concept I mentioned on Friday. To better show the example, I put it into a little Flash presentation with voice over. It's easier that way (not to DO, but to get across). It's just 2 and a half minutes, so if you could take the time to check it out and reply in the comments, that would be great!
So that should give you a good idea of what I'm thinking of. The key parts of this would be that a) it allows for people to technically have "separate" boards if they WANT to just look at one topic, and b) it promotes a sense of community as a whole by starting you off on the "Latest in All Topics" page, so you can just see what's going on up to the minute with every category.
In lieu (a fancy way of saying instead) of a blog post today, the discussion on the possible Fred the Monkey Forums continues in the comments of yesterday's blog post. If you haven't chimed in yet, now's as good a time as any! The more feedback the better.
It's 6AM and I'm awake. Unlike most times I'm up before the sun, I feel absolutely terrific. I'm worried later on the less-sleep-than-normal will catch up with me and I'll feel horrible, but for now WOO! I woke up and it was dark, but I felt completely rested, so I checked the clock and sure enough it was six. Since I was planning to start this new Monday at seven anyway, I hopped out of bed and got an hour jump on my schedule. I think maybe my brain is excited for whatever it decision it's apparently already made about the future and wants to get moving or something.
Of course, I haven't really made any decisions. A little bit maybe (for example, FtM will be somewhere in there and I'm not giving it up) but the plans are still roaming around my head so everything is extremely vague without any deadlines attached. That's the most exciting time, of course, because there's no pressure. I'm going to spend all week this week continuing to look at possibilities, pray about it, and seek advice from some wise people of my life for more feedback.
And I wanted to also take a moment to say thanks to the folks who already provided me some good feedback. So in no particular order thanks to Lauren, DJG, Louis, Papytendo, TheKeyMcKee, ToTheMax, and Jordo. You gave me some good stuff to think about, and I really do appreciate it.
If there are any other thoughts on the future plans, let me know. Once I figure things out a little more I'll be sure to announce any decisions here on the blog.
In the meantime, two things: First, I'm going to spend the small time that I'm not mulling over the future this week working on learning Toon Boom more and practicing art stuff. I don't plan to do any FtM related work at the moment, so I don't expect an update to the site this week. Second, that doesn't mean there's no Fred related updates at all, because it's Monday and that means a new blog from Sceb, so check it out!
