A very EARie post…

Continuing with my 642 Things To Draw book, today I tackled ears. Specifically the book said "Van Gogh's Ear" but that's rather difficult to reference considering after he went insane and cut it off no one thought "Hey, we should take a picture of this, someone might need to look it up as drawing reference on something called 'the internet' years from now." So instead I referenced other people's ears. If you've seen one you've seen them all, right?

Actually no.

What I learned more than anything else was just how unique people's ears are. There weren't any two that I found that really looked much alike. It's another great example of how we visually skip over details in every day life just because it isn't important to our brains. When we stop and really LOOK, it's amazing what's actually there.

At the bottom right there are copies of some of my favorite Jack Hamm cartoon ears, along with that final one in the corner which I came up with on my own after drawing all the rest. What a fun exercise this was! I can't believe how much I enjoyed it. I also spent a good five minutes coming up with the ear pun for the title of the blog. It was harder than I thought. Here's your challenge: Leave a comment with your best ear-related pun. You guys are better at this than I am.

  1. You can’t force us to do puns, it doesn’t work like that.

  2. Ugh, I hate looking at ears, you could say it’s my worst LOBEia.
I just need to calm down and reWAX.

    • Wow those are really good ones. I couldn’t think of any ear words besides “ear” myself.

  3. Ear puns are so drum

  4. It’s clear to me that I fear those ears the nearer they appear.

  5. Haha. I like all dem ears. All I did was draw Van Gogh’s ear… With a gas mask. Asking where its mommy was.

Because my bizarre brain decided his missing ear was looking for Van Gogh… And that connected it to a Dr. Who episode. Sometimes I’m so weard.
