Tomorrow is the first day of a new Year of the Monkey.
I thought about Fred the Monkey for the first time in quite awhile today when someone at work mentioned the upcoming Year of the Monkey. I remembered watching all the Fred cartoons back in 2006 — the “Closed for Repairs” toon on the green flash site that preceded the predecessor to the current design was the newest one at the time.
Particularly I wondered what would happen with Fred when the next Year of the Monkey came around! But it was a pretty ephemeral thing because 2016 felt like an eternity away at that time.
I was 10 years old then, and over the past 10 years I’ve produced my own video content, gained a small following, fell off of doing updates, and started over again with significantly diminished viewership. So I feel like I totally get the bittersweet feeling you must be experiencing right now!
In any case, I just wanted to pop in to say that everything you did with FtM made its impact on me and many other people, and if you ever feel inclined to revisit it, it should be to satisfy your own creative urges, not because you “owe” anyone anything. Life comes first.
That being said, you never know if your next cartoon will be the one to go viral and culminate in a real-life Alton Brown Christmas…
Ah! Someone else who truly understands the “following, fall-off, following-gone” journey. It’s certainly an interesting experience, isn’t it? Just try doing it MULTIPLE times, ha ha. Gets even weirder. Where’s the link to your video content?! You gotta plug that in comments so you can get your audience back. 😉
I’m glad you enjoyed the FtM toons back in the day! And I hope you got to see the new cartoon that released yesterday, too. So far it’s not “live-Alton-Christmas” viral, but I think people are enjoying it, and that’s enough for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKcqwScNDCY&feature=youtu.be
